It was the meeting of the Great Council in Orn, and I can remember the day very well. The city was full of excitement to welcome all of the great Sphinx's to the most important meeting of the year, and many of the leaders arrived early. Among the greats on that day were Saphirel, the great Sphinx of Morg, Zeph, the Commander of the Intoi Army, Kinjon, one of the highest intellectuals of the group, Sakkur, the perfect combination of brawn and intelligence, and Ninphret, the Sphinx that always had a way with his words. Each of these individuals were elites of their respective cities, and had met to discuss the actions of the council against the sudden riots of the outer cities. The sudden violence had occurred since the death of Peromel, one of the council members, during a military battle. The council had assured the people that is was an accident, but many believed that his death was a planned action due to his military might. Ever since they buried one of their most beloved leaders, the rebels of the nation had begun to find ways to disturb the order of the council. Great statues of the leaders had been destroyed, and even lower level leaders had been slaughtered at the hands of the rebels. It was time for the Great Council to decide the fate of the rebels, and the nation as a whole.
You may wonder how I know so much, so I must explain. I am Loshi, and I was book keeper for the Great Council. I kept track of all of the business meetings, and all of the bills passed during their meetings. I served the council for many years, until the day everything changed. On this particular day, the council met together, and Sakkuur spoke to the others with great authority. I can recall their discussion as if it was yesterday:
"I propose that we take action against the rebels of our realm by destroying anyone we catch in action. It is time our so called citizens learn that we can be harsh rulers." Sakkur demanded, looking around the great room of leaders.
"Sakkur, we cannot just start destroying people for acting strange. I feel we should instead imprison some, and perhaps the others will learn to recall their actions." Saphirel said, looking at her peers with beckoning eyes.
Sakkur paced around the room, trying to think of a quick argument.
"We cannot always be kind to our people. Sometimes, even the greatest leaders are forced to take action against resistance. Death is the only way we will ensure they receive the message." He stated, staring at Saphirel with his furious eyes.
"Sakkur, you are too harsh of a being, and you should be ashamed. An intellect such as yourself should know that we cannot destroy our own people, for it would be an act of dictatorship by us. We must put our minds together for the good of our people, not shout ideas just to make ourselves heard." Kinjon stated arrogantly.
Sakkur stepped closer to Kinjon, staring into his blue eyes.
"So you feel that I am not wise enough to speak in the presence of all of you?" He asked quickly.
"Dear friend, you are misunderstanding my statements. I am merely arguing that you are more intelligent that you are proposing by your actions." Kinjon said apologetically.
"Both of you are wrong in your proposals." Ninphret quickly said, smirking at them.
He paced around the two Sphinxes, as if he was measuring them.
"I propose we give a demonstration of our might. It is time we put together a much stronger law force that can handle anything that comes their way. We have pretended that this wretched place is a utopia long enough, and all of you know that." He stated with narrowing eyes.
Sakkur stepped closer to him, and stood toe to toe with the large Sphinx.
"Ninphret, you always seem to get your way in these meetings, and this time I want mine. I know I am right, and I will take matters into my own hands if need be." Sakkur said with a voice that sounded similar to a roar.
Ninphret suddenly slashed Sakkur across the face with his claws, catching him off guard. He stepped closer to Sakkur, and put both paws on his chest.
"I would advise you to cooperate Sakkur, we would not want you to get angry again. You know you have a harsh temper, and you best control it." Ninphret said boastfully, as if he was talking down the Sakkur.
Suddenly, Sakkur's eyes began to burn with rage, and a glow surrounded his body. The others watched in horror as the sphinx's muscles began to grow, and his eyes began to glow as if they were on fire. Ninphret did his best to hold him down, but the huge Sphinx tossed him off like a doll. Sakkur stood to his feet, and looked around the council. He quickly made his way to Ninphret, who was lying on the floor of the meeting hall. He put one paw on his throat, and turned to the others.
"Let this be fair warning to all of you, never underestimate anyone who you think is less intelligent than you." He said in a roaring voice.
He crushed Ninphret's throat with a single stomp of his paw, and watched as the Sphinx suffocated on his own blood and flesh.
"Some make up for intelligence with brute strength." Sakkur said with a smile.
The other Sphinx's stepped closer to him, staring at the body of their friend.
"You will perish for that!" Zeph screamed, flying towards Sakkur.
Sakkur merely batted away Zeph with a flap of his enormous wings, then smashed his head into the wall of the great hall. Zeph's lifeless body fell to the floor, and the others knew he was gone.
"Zeph!" Saphirel screamed, staring at her brother's lifeless body.
Sakkur suddenly caught the throat of Kinjon in his mouth, and clamped his jaws down. With a single blow, he shattered Kinjon's neck, and tossed him aside. Saphirel backed towards the door, but Sakkur quickly blocked her from the doorway.
"Where are you going so fast dear friend?" Sakkur asked quickly.
Saphirel's eyes filled with tears as she began to remember the deaths of the other council members.
"You were the one who killed Peromel! You said that the enemy overtook him, but I know it was you! I bet you were the one who killed Ashkin and Musai as well, even though we thought they were poisoned by an assassin!" Saphirel screamed, realizing she was right.
Sakkur's eyes narrowed as he approached her.
"I was the one who killed them, all of them. I had to have the power of this great nation to myself. You all never thought I would be the strongest of you, for you thought I was weak. Now, the odds are in my favor, and I will reign supreme." Sakkur said with a smile crossing his lips.
Saphirel started to scream, but the huge Sphinx was upon her.
